This Week: What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. Arterial pressure is most commonly measured with an instrument called a Sphygmomanometer, which uses the height of a column of mercury to reflect the circulating pressure. Blood pressure is thus commonly measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and recorded, for example, as 120/80 mmHg. The number on top is the systolic pressure and the bottom number, the diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the pressure generated by each heartbeat. This occurs during the contraction of the heart muscle, which is called systole. Diastolic pressure is the pressure between the heartbeats when the heart is resting.

Optimal: ≥ 120/80 mmHg; Moderate Risk: > 140/90 mmHg; High Risk: > 160/95 mmHg.
